Different Strategies
James Clear in his book Atomic Habits gives us several strategies that can help us in the process of forming habits some of which we have already mentioned in the previous posts.
1. Make a list of your daily habits
One of the greatest challenges in changing habits is maintaining awareness of what we are actually doing.
2. Habit Stacking
Identify a habit that already exists and ‘stack’ the new habit on top.
After <existing habit>, I will do <new habit>
3. Environment Design
Habits can be created more easily in new, facilitating environments. If you want to learn to play the guitar, keep it where you can see/ access it easily, not in the cupboard.
4. Join a like-minded Community
We imitate the close, the many and the powerful. Join a community where the desired behaviour is the normal behaviour and you already have something in common with the group. The shared identity begins to reinforce your personal identity
Create attractive behaviours
5. Motivation Ritual
Create rituals to start your day and to prepare you for a specific situation. Whenever you want to get in the mood. You press play.
6. Repetition not Perfection
Habits are formed by frequency not time. With repletion you perform a desired action unconsciously and effortlessly.
7. Reduce Friction
A new habit should not feel like a challenge. Prepare the environment so there is no friction.
8. The 2 minute Rule
When you START a habit, it should take you less than 2 minutes to do so.
9. Automate
Whenever you can, automate good habits and eliminate bad habits. Use the tools and apps available.
10. Immediate satisfaction
Add a little bit of immediate pleasure to habits. What is rewarded is repeated. What is punished is avoided.
11. Personal Loyalty Program
Make the habit avoidance visible. Devise a method to give yourself points when you stick to your habit formation journey.
12. Habit Tracker
Measure your progress daily. Though remember that when a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure.
Which strategy will be the easiest for you to practice?
