HABIT FORMATION - 8/10

Sustaining a Habit

We have explored various stories and strategies of forming a habit. And while conscious and consistent practice of these strategies will help in the journey, James Clear gives more tips to help sustain the habit. And then I have added some of my own given my learnings and experiences.

1.       Forget about the goals, focus on the systems

Bad habits repeat themselves not because you don’t want to change but because you have the wrong system to change. We have seen how the environment change can help the habit change. We have learnt about habit stacking and other strategies. So, focus on the system/ process. The goal will automatically be achieved.

2.       1% better every day

This means you can be 37.78% better every year. Go for gradual, incremental changes. Consolidate each change before introducing the next level of change. The Big Bang theory works for the creation of the cosmos. It does not work for habits! Slow and steady does win the race. The mind needs to be gradually changed. Compound interest, they say, is the 8th wonder of the world. Success is the product of daily habits not a once in a lifetime transformation.

3.       Fall in love with boredom

Falling in love with boredom can be a transformative experience, especially when it comes to forming lasting habits. Embracing the stillness of boredom allows us to create a foundation for meaningful routines. Instead of seeking excitement in fleeting distractions, we learn to savor the simplicity of repetitive actions, finding comfort in the rhythm of daily practice. As you engage with boredom, you will discover that the boring moments are often the building blocks of progress, nurturing our growth and encouraging a deeper connection to the transformative power of consistency.

4.       What gets tracked, gets done

Do track your progress. Have an accountability buddy or just mark your attendance. Tracking is a crucial component of forming and sustaining new habits, acting as both a compass and a mirror for your progress. By recording your actions, whether through journals, apps, or simple checklists, you will we gain insights into your behavior patterns. Tracking provides you the motivation to go forward as you see your progress and celebrate your achievements.

5.       Don’t miss twice

Keep up the momentum. You decide to go for a walk every morning and do it religiously for 8 months. And then the rains come and you decide continue after the rains. How hard will it be for you to get back? Instead, take advantage of dry spells and go for the walk on days it is not raining or at a different time during the day when it is not raining.
